Democracy and Inequality in CEE

From July 1st to 4th, 2025, The Cluster of Excellence, "The Politics of Inequality", hosted its first workshop on Democracy and Inequality in CEE. The conference was co-organized with Laura Jakli.

The workshop brought together scholars across methodologies, and career stages to address democratic governance, the role of inequality in shaping political institutions, party competition, and civil society, in a region often overlooked by canonical scholarship. Against the backdrop of Central and Eastern Europe’s unique political trajectory—from authoritarianism to democratization, to recent democratic backsliding—the conference examined how inequalities at the micro, meso, and macro levels influence democratic resilience and erosion. Please see the program from the 2025 conference below.

Thank you to the The Cluster of Excellence, "The Politics of Inequality", DFG, and Harvard Business School for sponsorship.
